The play staged at Dromos Theatre titled “Caesar” (Καίσαρας) is actually based on William Shakespeare’s political tragedy Julius Caesar, adapted and directed by Emmanuel G. Mavros.
Set in a futuristic “New Great Italy” (Rome), the governing political faction secures power for the fourth consecutive term under a formidable, authoritative female leader named Caesar. As Caesar consolidates total control and steers the regime toward absolute authority, a growing rift forms within the political establishment.
Fearing the death of democracy and the rise of a monarchy, prominent political figures—led by Cassia (a female iteration of Cassius) and Brutus—conspire to assassinate Caesar. However, after the assassination, the zeal to restore freedom devolves into populism, deceit, civil strife, and a ruthless scramble for power, questioning whether the conspiracy was ever truly about democracy or merely grabbing wealth and control.
